What you need to do
Before every meal this week, drink a big glass of water, about 16 ounces. Then eat. Aim for about 1.6 litres a day for women and 2 for men, more in heat, with exercise, or on a GLP-1 medicine.
Options that work
- Fill a 16-ounce glass and drink it while you plate the food
- Keep a bottle on the desk and on the counter. Out of sight is out of mind
- Sparkling water counts. Coffee and tea count toward the total
- On a GLP-1: thirst goes quiet along with hunger. Schedule the water, do not wait to feel like it
Tip for success
Pair it with something you already do. Water goes on the counter when the pan goes on the stove.

Why this works
Adults 55 to 75 who drank two cups of water before each meal lost about 44% more weight over 12 weeks in one small trial [76]. Thirst fades with age, so older adults need to schedule fluids rather than wait for it [81]. Four medical societies list hydration among the priorities for people on GLP-1 medicines, where dehydration makes every side effect worse [25].
