Real food week
Seven days where most of what you eat has a short ingredient list.
What you need to do
For one week, make most of what you eat real food: things you could name the ingredients of. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, beans, vegetables, fruit, potatoes, rice, oats, nuts, olive oil. Packaged snacks, sweetened drinks and fast food are the things to shrink. Not zero. Most.
Options that work
- Shop the edges of the store: produce, meat, dairy, then one aisle for beans, oats and rice
- Read the label once: if the list is longer than five things you cannot picture, it goes back
- Sweetened drinks are the first swap. Water, sparkling water, coffee, tea
- Cook double at dinner so lunch tomorrow is real food too
- Plan the one meal out you are going to have, and enjoy it
Tip for success
You are not giving anything up. You are crowding it out. When the fridge is full of real food, the packaged food stops being the easy choice.
Part of the fundamental Real food most of the time.
Why this works
In the only fully controlled inpatient trial, people offered ultra-processed meals ate about 500 calories a day more than on matched real food [55]. Even when both diets met healthy-eating guidelines, eight weeks of minimally processed food lost about twice the weight [56]. Across about ten million people, ultra-processed food is linked with 32 adverse outcomes [57]. A Mediterranean pattern, which is just real food with olive oil and nuts, cut major cardiovascular events by about 30% [64].
